This is really true. Delhi is the city that has been destroyed and built many times. So in my series of blog I will take you to a virtual tour of Delhi ranging from reign of Mughals to epic fight of Mahabharata and how finally it was declared a nation’s capital.

Premature Names of Delhi
Inderprastha: Established in 2800 BC. The present area around Purana Qila. Built by Pandavas.

Lal Kot or Qila Rai Pithora: Built in 1052 AD. It was built by Rajput tomars. Prithviraj Chauhan defende the city from Muslim Invaders and named the city from Lal Kot to Qila Rai Pithora. Currently the area extends from Qutab Minar to Mehrauli.

Siri: Established by Alauddin Khilji for protection against Mongols during 1304 A.D. Currently the area extends near Hauz Khas and Gulmohar Park.

Tughlaqabad:  Built by Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq in 1321- 23 AD. Currently the area extends 8 km away from Qutab Complex.

Jahanpanah: Means Refuge of the world and was coined by Muhammad Bin Tughlaq in mid 14th century. The location of Muhammad Bin Tughlaq’s property in Delhi extends between Siri and Qutab Minar

Ferozabad: Built by Feroz Shah Tughluq in 1354 AD. In the present times all that remains of the property is Feroz Shah Kotla.

Dinpanah and Shergarh: Dinpanah was built by Humayun and Shergarh by Sher Shah Suri (1538-1545). In current times the site is opposite to zoo, near Purana Qila.

Shajahanabad: Built in Mid 17th Century by renowned Shah Jahan. In current time the area is located at Old Delhi, Red Fort and Jama Masjid.

Lutyen’s Delhi or New Delhi: The city was built by the British on the south-west and was declared the nation’s capital on 12 December 1911. On 12 December 2011 New Delhi celebrated 100 years of serving as Nation’s Capital.
The name Delhi
As per Hindu writings it was said that Delhi was referred to as hathinapur(Elephant city) in sanskrit. As per another theory Raja Dhilu founded ancient Delhi in 800 B.C. Some stated that the name came into existence from the word Dhilli. This was also stated by Pasanaha Chariu of Vibudh Sridhar where he said that the capital of this country is Dhilli.

Early History

Delhi is a city with a strong historical background. Many historians claimed that Delhi was a combination of 7 different cities that came into existence from 3000 B.C. and the 17th century A.D. The history of Delhi goes back to epic tale of Mahabharata. Indraprastha a city in Delhi was the capital of Pandavas and was founded around 2800 BC. As said by eminent archaeologists Michael Wood in his BBC documentary that the excavated property in Delhi from the site of Purana Qila matches to the item used in Mahabharata.
